Why do we need this directory- can't we assume that all businesses are LGBTQ+ friendly?
It would be nice to assume that every place we do business is LGBTQ+ friendly, or at least neutral.
The Iowa Legislature has discussed and/or passed 30 anti LGBTQ bills in 2023. The Supreme Court has made it legal for businesses to refuse service to the LGBTQ community. We can't assume anything. It is a dangerous privilege to assume that LGBTQ people are safe and welcomed in all places.
Does it mean that businesses not on this list are anti-LGBTQ? No it doesn't! The businesses included in this directory have responded to the request to be included. If you would like to add your business or suggest a business, please contact Kelly Butcher!
